Sir Jack Brabham 1926 - 2014

Date Added: 19/5/2014
The "Legend" Sir Jack Brabham passed away today at home on the Gold Coast.  Sir Jack had suffered from failing health for more than a decade, having regular renal dialysis.

Many things have been written about Sir Jack - he came up the hard way and conquered the world.  Above all he remained a gentleman, always humble and became a role model for many others in motor-sport.

Sir Jack was a genuine statesman and the world will probably never see another like him.

Vale  Sir Jack Brabham.

Statement by management

Date Added: 25/9/2010
This company has no interest in or association with Six Stroke Engine Developments Pty Limited, a company under the direction and control of Mr Steve Eleftheriadis (commonly known as Steve Adis).

Mr Eleftheriadis, from Car City Minchinbury, NSW and Ringwood Victoria, Reference Audio Visual Pty Ltd and Ausmarble Pty Ltd was the subject of a subpoena to the Victorian Police regarding his criminal history (Jack Brabham Engines v Beare 2010 FCA 35 of 27 January 2010). http://www.austlii.edu.au/au/cases/cth/FCA/2010/35.html

Continuing serious events over many years targetted at Sir Jack, directors of this company and their family members, resulted in Mr Eleftheriadis (Adis) being charged by Victorian Police with stalking (s21A Crimes Act Victoria) and his signing a Deed of Undertaking (registered with a Queensland Court) to refrain from acts of physical assault to the directors and their family members including damage to property.

Barry and the quarter scale working model of the BT19

Date Added: 27/9/2009

Barry's words:

"Being retired and interested in model engineering, I decided to build a quarter scale working 1966 Repco Brabham BT19 formula one race car.  This is a long term project and I am a little reticent to talk publicly about it at this early stage but there have been a few expressions of interest - so here is a little information on progress to date.

The original car:  is now owned by Repco Ltd and is currently on display at the National Sports Museum at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.  During its racing career and since, there have obviously been some minor changes which are published in reports and photos.  Therefore to simplify research, I decided to base the model car as it currently appears in the National Sports Museum.

The Model:  Size:  1/4 scale, overall length 900 mm, rear wheel diameter 175 mm, engine capacity 48 cc.

First Step - Frame:  Making the frame from tubing of a scale wall thickness would, I think, be too fragile so I have cheated a little and substituted thicker material on the model.  Although heavier, weight is not an issue and is indistinguishable in appearance.

To establish the basic frame, sub assemblies and joining pieces were made and the longitudinal members slotted into these (similar to a construction kit) and silver soldered in place while supported in a temporary jig.  Diagonal bracing was then fitted and finally the numerous brackets made and installed.  So, after a temporary coat of paint to prevent rusting, the frame is now more or less complete, except for engine mountings which will be installed when the engine is ready).

Wheels:  tyres - in 1966 racing slicks were not in use so the tyre mould needed to incorporate a tread pattern.  A crimping tools was made to form the tread shape along the edge of curved aluminium plates which were then interleaved between steel spacers to make up the four outer sections of the mould.  Because vulcanizing process requires considerable pressure and heat, the mould needed to be very solid.
Note:  unlike the original wheels, I decided to make the centres and rims separately.

Centres (castings)  front and rear wheels differ in the shape and number of spokes.  Not having CNC machining capability, I made small dies to form multiple spokes from sheet copper and these were used to make the patterns.  Wheel centres are now ready for casting in aluminium.

Rims:  these will be split to simplify fitting of tyres and mounting onto wheel centres.  Rims are currently being machined from solid aluminium not magnesium as per the original).

What Next? The wheel hubs and suspension components are next items on the agenda.  This will bring the model to "rolling chassis" stage.  Meanwhile, research continues into the Repco Brabham 620 engine and the Hewland DG 300 gearbox.

Hidden Benefits:  Already this project has produced some surprise benefits for me.  I have met a number of very interesting and helpful people including Sir Jack who graciously took time for a chat when I visited Queensland in August.

Summing up:  So - that's where I am at present.  As to when it will be finished, I do not know - but it would be nice to have it ready for the 50th anniversary in 2016, wouldn't it?

Vale - Frank Gardner

Date Added: 29/8/2009
After a long illness, Frank Gardner passed away yesterday in Queensland.

Frank will be remembered for his achievements in motor racing including competing in the Formula 1 World Championship and winning the British Touring car Chamionship on three occasions in 1967, 1968 and 1973.  In 1971 Frank won the European Formula 5000 Championship.

Frank's successes in Australia included winning the 1977 Australia Sports Sedan Championship.  During the 1980's Frank became Development Engineer and Team Manager for the black and gold JPS BMW team.  Later Frank became involved in driver training in Australia.

Before his career in motor racing, Frank was a keen boxer, surf lifesaver and all round sportsman.  His love of golf endured for many years.

Frank also wrote two books:  "The Castrol Racing Driver's Manual" and "Drive to Survive".

Perhaps these words are the most appropriate from "The Castrol Racing Driver's manual" when Frank said:  "... motor racing has given me a lot of laughs, a lot of good times and a lot of trouble since 1949 but I wouldn't have missed it for anything ..."

Frank was aged 78 years.

Brisbane, Australia "Black Jack" yacht launch

Date Added: 13/7/2008
On Saturday 12 July 2008, the "Black Jack" was officially launched.  "Black Jack" is the nickname of three time Formula One world champion Sir Jack Brabham and the yacht was named after the Australian hero in honour of his sporting achievements.

Sir Jack cracked the champagne on the bow sprit whilst wrapped in a checked flag representing his Formula One racing history.

"I don't think I will get on board much and I'm  happy to watch her progress from shore", said Sir Jack who was later presented with a scaled half model of the yacht.  "My first sailing experience was onboard a catamaran.  It's wasn't the best day on the water, so I can't wait to get onboard this one, just once".  said Sir Jack in his speech to the media at the launch yesterday.

Purchased by Brisbane businessman Peter Harburg two months ago from USA, Black Jack will compete in her first race in two week's time when she hits the start line for the Audi Sydney Gold Coast Race hosted by the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia.  Then Black Jack will race for her home club Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron in the 2nd Brisbane to Keppel Tropical Yacht Race.

"We are looking forward to many fine moments aboard Black Jack as we race along the east coast of  Australia" said Harburg.

Skipper Mark Bradford said "We made a promise to Sir Jack to perform in honour of his nickname.  Now it's time to give it a shot".

Australia's "Auto Action magazine" voted Sir Jack Brabham our greatest motor racing driver.

The global judging panel is made up of motor racing critics, technical experts and drivers, including current Formula One driver, Mark Webber and V8 Supercar icon, Craig Lowndes.  From the Editor, Andrew MacLean: "while it is difficult to comprehend even in this day and age, just how tough it would have been for an  Australian to compete on the world stage, the fact that Sir Jack won three Formula One World Championships - is one of which with his own team - is simply awesome.  And as the father of our greatest motor racing dynasty proves he had some pretty special DNA".

Sir Jack is ranked number one in the Top 100 Australian Drivers' list, which will be published today.

Congratulations Sir Jack Brabham!
